Midwest favorite chocolate shop Kilwins to open in north Dallas

Something sweet is coming to far north Dallas: Kilwins, a Michigan-based chain famous for its chocolates and sweet treats, will open a location at the Sound at Cypress Waters, at 3081 Olympus Blvd. According to a release, the shop will open by early 2026.

Kilwins was founded in 1947 in Petoskey, Michigan by Don and Katy Kilwin, and is known for its boxed chocolates, fudge, and ice cream. Nostalgia and adherence to original recipes is part of their culture: They still make their assorted chocolates by hand using the same recipes developed by Don Kilwin decades ago.

There are now more than 175 locations in the U.S., with nine in Texas. That includes two DFW locations: Grapevine, and The Colony at Grandscape.

Signature treats include chocolate truffles, chocolate nut caramels, ice cream, and caramel apples.

Their ice cream is super-premium and most stores have 32 flavors in stock including butter pecan, cake batter, cappuccino chocolate chip, chocolate chip cookie dough, chocolate peanut butter, marshmallow s’more, mint chocolate chip, and New Orleans praline pecan. They also rotate in seasonal flavors like pumpkin pie.

You can get their ice cream by the scoop in their waffle cones, which they make in-store; or in cups, with hot fudge and caramel toppings; or by the quart.

This new Dallas location is part of a big expansion across Texas for the company, which has three other new locations penciled in for the Lone Star State in Waco, Midland, and East Village in Austin. Waco and Midland will open this summer, Austin and Dallas in early 2026.

“Texas is a natural fit for Kilwins,” says Kilwins president and CEO Brian Britton in a statement. “The climate supports year-round ice cream sales, the population is booming, and there’s an ideal balance of family-centric communities and Midwestern transplants who already know and love the Kilwins brand.”

Fisher Investments nabs four Dallas-area office buildings in regional expansion

Money manager Fisher Investments has made good on its promise to focus its growth in Texas after exiting the West Coast, adding four office buildings to its real estate portfolio.

The financial services firm based in Plano, Texas, moved its headquarters to the Lone Star State in 2023 after the Washington State Supreme Court upheld a capital gains tax on its wealthiest residents. Fisher Investments, led by Dallas-based executive chairman, co-chief investment officer and founder Ken Fisher, managed over $299 billion of assets under management globally as of the end of last year.

The 46-year-old company acquired the four Dallas-area office buildings totaling 442,542 square feet of office space, including three office buildings sold by Billingsley Co. as well as the corporate headquarters of G6 Hospitality at 4001 International Parkway in Carrollton, Texas, a northern suburb about 20 miles north of downtown Dallas. G6 Hospitality is the parent company of the Motel 6 and Studio 6 brands.

Naj Srinivas, an executive vice president for Fisher Investments, confirmed the acquisitions of the four office buildings to CoStar News and said the properties will be used “simply for future expansion capacity.”

The additional real estate enhances the money manager’s Dallas-area headquarters at 6500 International Parkway in Plano. Fisher Investments did not immediately disclose its plans for its current headquarters and how this newly acquired real estate will play a role in the company’s expansion.

The four office buildings are within a half mile of Fisher Investments’ headquarters despite being located in a different municipality. The acquisitions come at a time when deal volume for office users purchasing their own office buildings rose about 10% through the third quarter of 2024, according to CoStar’s market analytics team. Companies such as Raising Cane’s, Associa and Delta Electronics are stepping in to buy office buildings they intend to occupy — reflecting an interest in growing their businesses in the Dallas-Fort Worth region.

A Peek at the New Miriam Cocina in Coppell

Miriam Cocina Latina has expanded to the suburb of Coppell. The flagship restaurant opened in 2019 adjacent to Klyde Warren Park and is widely known for the charismatic charm of founder Miriam Jimenez.

The traditional dishes from her kitchen represent a broad scope of Latin flavors, from Jimenez’s native Dominican Republic to a few Tex-Mex staples (almost compulsory in these parts).

Like the original space with its views of bustling downtown and the park, the new location at The Sound at Cypress Waters is also picturesque. In addition to the spacious dining room, a big (climate-controlled) patio faces the North Lake waterfront.

Miriam Cocina is open for lunch and dinner, and — soon— brunch on the weekends. The menu leans on fresh and light variations of traditional Latin dishes; some favorites include ceviche Punta Cana and the Pescado a la Veracruzano ($29.95), a whole fried snapper served with a traditional sauce. There are also empanadas, short rib enchiladas, carne asada and cabrito a la diabla.

Brunch offers a cornucopia of options from bacon, egg and cheese waffle sandwiches to creme brulee French toast and chilaquiles.

More than 100 drinks on the beverage menu range from martinis to margaritas and Sangria. There’s even a nod to co-owner Shannon Wynne: Shannon’s Milk Punch ($14) is whole milk with bourbon, brown sugar and vanilla extract.

Miriam Cocina joins several other spots from Wynn and his team at Cypress Waters, including Flying Fish, Flying Saucer and Rodeo Goat.

Miriam Cocina, 3121 Olympus Blvd., Coppell. Daily, 11 a.m. – 10 p.m.
